    Wine Of The Week – Finca Villacreces Pruno, Ribera del Duero 2008

    Each week I like to choose a new wine to introduce to our fans. These wines vary by region, by varietal and even by price. I don’t think cost and value are necessarily related. So I like to focus on wines I have experienced on my travels and I think our fans will enjoy trying. salut!

    “The 2008 Pruno, from the estate’s younger vines, is a blend of Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot aged for 12 months in seasoned French oak. A glass-coating opaque purple color, it offers up a sexy bouquet of Asian spices, incense, cedar, mineral, and assorted black fruits. Super-rich, bordering on opulent, it has layers of succulent, spicy fruit, enough structure to support 2-3 years of cellaring, and exceptional length. This sensational value over-delivers in a very big way.”

    The estate of Villacreces adjoins Vega Sicilia.

    THE STORY
    One of the most sought-after pieces of land in Ribera del Duero, the estate of Villacreces sits between the world renowned  estates of Vega Sicilia and Pingus, two of the most famous properties with in Ribera del Duero if not all of Spain. The estate was owned for years by the Cuadrado family but in 2003 was sold to the Anton family, owners of a Rioja bodega and one of Spain’s most famous Michelin starred restaurants in the Basque country.
    Pruno Entrance Gate Historically, the wines of Villacreces have been a compromise between the newer style wines of Ribera and the classical rustic style of long ageing in older barrels. The dynamic young owners who have just taken over the estate want to take the fruit from this amazing terroir in a slightly different direction, with shorter periods in oak to preserve the fruit and freshness and liveliness of the wines. If their newest addtion ‘Pruno’ is any indication, they made a terrific choice. It has amazing colour and intensity, and is a sure sign of this estate’s steady ascent to the top of the “quality tree” in Ribera del Duero.
